Note: firmware 3.0 for the E-M1 II adds the OM-Log400 profile and enables phase detection in video mode, which means that the C-AF performance should improve dramatically in comparison to the test above.

Hi Mathieu. I installed FW 3.0 and the difference in video is tremendous. I do not have a G9, I have a GH4 (which has DFD not DFD2) and at least compared that cam it is now leaps and bounds better. Very serious improvement!

I'm so glad I bought a G9, I love it. I'm surprised that the Olympus images are so green biased though and that I didn't buy that.

the E-M1 II if you're interested in birds in flight, otherwise it depends on the lenses. The Pro series does fine on the G9, older lenses with a slower AF motor can be more limited with Panasonic DfD system.

      amazing video man.

What killed me was the skin tone test; green, yeah. Otherwise, they both did their own thing well it seemed.

Oh so green. Everything is green. Green things are green. Brown things are green. Blue things are green. Skin tones are green. Why the obsession with making everything green, Olympus?

I'm surprised. Before this video my favourite was the Oly, against the G9. But in this video the Oly colours are awful. In the face there is a terrible green effect. Is it true? The settings were good?

As a EM1 and EM1.II owner, and previously E3 and E5, it is sad to see Olympus struggling FOREVER with continuous AF and face detection, without even trying to improve via firmware updates. Sad.

Thank you so much for this video. I can tell you put a lot of work and time in to it. I just bought a Oly 12-40mm f/2.8 (used) for my G9. You saved me a lot of time searching the right settings and profiles on my G9. I know this wasn’t your intention, but videos packed with real world samples and settings are very helpful. Great work and a thought provoking video. Thank you. Mike.

Yes, more green or G9 looked more yellow. I think both could be fixed.

Were there any improvements with Olympus AF after the update in regards to Video tracking faces. The g9 appears to be miles better in this regard. Also what does the em1 record externally in 4k? Finally does one work better for vlogging over the other? I've been seeing the em1 go for as low $1000 in 8/10 condition and this seems like an amazing deal.

10 minutes is a lot. After shooting video for 10 years, 99% of my clips have been under 3 minutes. But if you film concert etc it can be a bummer of course.

And the limit can be bypassed. 😉👍

10min if you record at 50 or 60p.

Is there a better camera (of any sensor size) for the price than the G9, especially for those who shoot more stills than video? I've watched at least 20 YouTube videos on it and it goes head-to-head (for stills and video) with cameras that cost much more, even full frames and APS-C bodies, and wins or ties on most features except for the low-light against a full frame camera like the A7III. This is about the 3rd or 4th comparison I've seen to the Olympus and they all give the Oly the nod for IBIS, but the G9 boasts 6.5 stops of stabilization, even better than the GH5, so it is not far off the mark.

      G9 MUCH better colors.

Oly made the model look green-skinned and sickly.

Pana showed much more pleasing reds in the skin tones.

      Pana also much quicker autofocus.

      Oly had better stabilization.

      Great test...

After watching this, I can attest that, without a doubt, the best camera for video is the Panasonic GH5s. Thank you very much. But even better than the GH5s is the Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K.

For me colours and stabilisation go to the Olympus, with the stabilisation being a huge difference. But the G9 seems to finally have cracked the DfD autofocus mechanics that were pretty middling on the GH5 and the GH5s. You can see the microadjustments in the contrast system, whereas the phase takes longer, but snaps to the point and stays there. If you're using it to pull focus in a shot the E-M1 seems more confident on touch screen autofocus, but for a walk and talk video contrast with DfD is better for following. Two great options! Though I feel like the E-M1 ii and the E-M5 ii could do with an update.

First of all:  Thank you for your labors making this video – your work is appreciated!  Kudos to Heather for being so patient for all the test shots!

Olympus had better color saturation overall
Heather’s skin tones appeared sickly green with Olympus: with Panasonic, skin tones are natural
Monotone – Panasonic’s L-Monochrome looked best and had better contrast; otherwise Olympus’s monochromes variations looked better
Dynamic range – Panasonic had more recovered detail and color

      Panasonic had better Image Stabilization
Continuous Tracking – Panasonic better by far
Face Detection - Panasonic better by far
Touch Focus - Panasonic appears to be faster but perhaps should have mentioned exactly when the screen was touched.
Slow Motion - Panasonic is better, obviously, 180 vs 120
ISO sensitivity - Panasonic is better but the two are close at ISO 6400

as a hybrid shooter, i am impressed with the stills and video capabilities of the g9. if only it shot 10 bit either internal or externally via hdmi. so close. ugh. thank you for the effort and the sharing. i am an appreciative subscriber. thumbs up.

The mix of comments shows how subjective the assessment of colour can be. Despite working with Panasonic cameras like the GH3 and GH4 for years, I prefer the way the E-M1 Mark II looks in this comparison, particularly with skin tones. Heather's face is more 'alive' in this comparison, whereas her skin looks more uniform in the G9 footage. Olympus IBIS is on another level from just about any other manufacturer, although G9 autofocus, tracking and high ISO easily beat the E-M1 II.
