I remember hearing about this but never got the specifics on it till now. A lot things just worked out that day, his feet getting caught on the yoke, deciding not to let him go, the altitude, etc. It seems to be a habit of some maintenance workers cutting corners to speed things up. Nuts, bolts, screws etc are engineered to a certain size for a reason and must be maintained. To many times something like this has happened for the very same reason, got in a hurry. Just when I think TheFlightChannel can't get any better they do. You never cease to amaze me with the graphics, the information provided with the details not to mention the addition of side by side views. You are nearing 500,000 subs and I personally can't wait to see you hit 1 Million which won't take long and you certainly deserve. Thank you again Sir for sharing your work and spending the time to put these video's together.

Crew wanted ditch the captain, and the only reason they didn't is for fear he might get sucked into engine and crash them.

why would they even contemplate releasing the captain's body (his death) instead of trying to pull him back in, in the first place?

In case of emergencies on the, the pilots must be aware, but not just the pilots, the flight crews too so that the passengers are safe, but in this video, the flight crews are in charge to control the damage aircraft and to give care to the pilot that is hurt and the passengers must know what to do in case of emergencies they have to BRACE POSITION.
That's what to do if there is an emergency.
Remember:Don't think of yourself only but think the other people too who needs care.

"The flight and cabin crew decide whether to let the captains body go"

I understand that it may have crossed their minds in the best interest of everyone else on board. But I wonder what the Captain must have thought of that when he found out they considered it.

As a captain he would have understood it was a consideration if it was putting the plane in danger but luckily for him it was more dangerous to let him go

This is one of the most unbelievable air survival stories I 've heard . The initial wind chill air temperature for the Captain ( -17 Celcius, with 345 M.P.H. winds ) was BELOW - 60 F. ( - 47 Celcius ) for many minutes. And he was lightly dressed. By all logic, he should not have survived.
The windshield blowout took place at the unbreathable height of 17,300 feet. It took 20 minutes to land the plane. The Captain hung on to life and lived through all of that.

Lots of awkward decisions? Welcome to the real world! Hindsight isn't very helpful here, so people condemning the crew for considering letting the 'body' go are missing the point. If the captain's body was irretrievable and endangering the aircraft, the correct decision would have been to let it go. If the captain was clearly still alive, but irretrievable and endangering the aircraft, THE DECISION WOULD HAVE BEEN THE SAME.

It's a terrible decision to have to make, but that's what command and responsibility is all about. That's what the stripes on your shoulders really mean. Flight crews always appear glamorous and chic, but beneath that exterior they're professionals trained to deal with life and death situations. Sorry if that doesn't fit in with the cosy 'Disney/Hollywood' idea of piloting - nobility, heroism, fairness, justice, niceness, wholesomeness, etc. The only Hollywood quote worthy of this situation comes from Mr Spock in one of the Star Trek films: "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Or the one."

BUT that's all fiction. This amazing story has a happy ending. Yay. But don't forget that, if the crew hadn't been able to free the controls, the captain would have been ejected and would now be dead. A sobering thought.

Being able to fly a big jet on a simulator at home is fun, but it only gives you maybe 40% of what being in control of a passenger plane is all about. No simulator can reproduce the sense of jeopardy that lies just below the surface. No simulator makes you actually, physically responsible for hundreds of lives - including your own.

I'm sure many people watching this channel will also be fans of the 'Captain Joe', 'Dutch Pilot Girl', and 'Mentour Pilot' channels. They're brilliantly entertaining and inspiring, but don't kid yourselves that air crew have an easy job. Flying a big jet is NOT just like driving a train or a bus.

This kind of video is a great reminder that commercial pilots are in positions of responsibility, just like a ship's captain. They're trained in order to enable them to make tough decisions that affect hundreds of lives every day. It's worth remembering if you dream of one day getting your wings...

Whatever. Congratulations, TheFlightChannel - you do excellent work! :-)

I can't believe they contemplated releasing the captain. That's the dumbest sh* I have ever heard in my life. And the only reason they didn't was in case his body flew into the engine? How about the fact that he is still alive??? Unbelievable.
