When I rode this Austrian Alpine Coaster it was the longest in the World. My first ride took 5 minutes automobilrevue.net/v/TVVWRmlOVlJ2RVU but I tried on my next ride to see if it was possible to complete it faster than 5 minutes. After 3 minutes all was going well until we caught up to my friend Chris...so for the final 2 minutes we chased him in a high-speed alpine coaster pursuit. Please forgive the screams and over-excitement at the beginning of the ride...but at full speed some of those corners and bumps in the track are a little scary!

Now this is a coaster! My only question is this: was the braking automatic or did the rider have to do it?

davidjellis In reply to Raymond Craig

@Raymond Craig My sincerest apologies Raymond...my comment was never intended to be an attempt at bashing anyone, and if you took it that way I am very sorry. You were asking about the safety aspects of the alpine coaster and I was simply reflecting that in my experience the 'culture' in the US is to insist on riders signing waivers and introducing over the top rules to cover their backs legally regarding these type of attractions, in the fear of being sued. It was not intended to criticise you (or other Americans) in any way.
I have long-standing friendships with many senior members of the American Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE) who will openly admit that this suing culture has largely stemmed from the US. Lawsuits against amusement parks are well documented online and regularly occur in respect of US parks, less so in mainland Europe. It's not saying we are (in any way) 'holier than though' - I was just reflecting on my observations from my extensive worldwide travel. I have ridden over 1200 roller coasters in 20+ countries around the world and have visited over 45 US states in my hobby and always found the Americans to be lovely people. Apologies again if you took offence to my observations.

@davidjellis Disappointing that you would find a way to turn this conversation into a means to bash Americans. I must say this is a typical European "holier than thou" attitude-driven response of which I am not a fan and do not appreciate. I don't know where you're from, but I'm an American and I was taught to treat people with respect and dignity - until they step on you. Then you step on them, HARD.

But I won't do that. I'll just say that this conversation is over and let it end at that.

davidjellis In reply to Raymond Craig

@Raymond Craig The occasional rear-shunt can happen on similar rides, but the ride safety rules are very clear on riders taking responsibility for any traffic ahead of you, and generally speaking they are well observed. Increasingly there are magnetic brakes being retro-fitted to them, largely a result of the 'American' suing culture where people don't take responsibility for their own actions, but in mainland Europe people are still treated like adults!

@davidjellis Now that's just plain scary. I'd have nightmares about the person behind me not paying attention and having their car ram into mine. And at those speeds, the results could be disastrous.
